The USS Monitor was the first ever ironclad warship of the US Navy. Built at the Continental Iron Works in Brooklyn, NY and launched there on January 30, 1862. She was 172' in length, her beam 41'6", her speed 8 knots. She is most famous for her participation in the first-ever battle between two ironclad warships, the Battle of Hampton Roads where she met the CSS Virginia on March 9, 1862, and was lost at sea December 31, 1862. She carried 59 officers and men. Our model is 16" long x 3½" wide and stands 4" high on a wood base with a brass name plaque.
